CartGenie DT, Destination Tax, is an add-on to our CartGenie Shopping Cart Software. CartGenie DT enables Washington state merchants to comply with the requirements of the "Streamlined Sales Tax" (SST) law that went into effect on July 1, 2008. The SST requires that Washington retailers that deliver or ship goods to customers in Washington must collect sales tax based on the location where the customer receives the merchandise. (1) How does it work? J Street Technology has partnered with Edge Technologies to deliver Web-based support for the requirements of the SST. CartGenie utilizes Edge Technologies "Tax Link Web Service", a service that delivers real-time destination based tax rates for the state of Washington. During the customer checkout process the CartGenie storefront determines if the Ship-To location is within the state of Washington and if so, contacts Tax Link to determine the appropriate tax rate to charge the customer. (2) Who Maintains the Tax Rate Tables?
Edge Technologies maintains the tax rates for Tax Link. Each quarter, Edge Technologies updates the database with the latest tax rates. (3) What happens if Tax Link can't find a tax rate?
It is possible that a new housing development or commercial location may not yet be listed in the Tax Link rate table. This would only be the case if the Washington State Revenue department had not yet updated their records. In this case the CartGenie storefront would charge the customer the "default" rate for the state of Washington. The default rate is controlled by the merchant and is set in the Tax Manager within the CartGenie Desktop Engine.
