A Custom Software Developer is Like an Event Planner

When people start looking for a custom software developer, the first things they usually consider are experience, industry knowledge, and technical skills. And while those are important, I’ve learned that there’s another factor that can make or break a project: communication.

Why Communication Matters as Much as Code

I can’t tell you how many clients have told me about custom software development projects that went off track simply because their old developer didn’t keep them informed. Clear communication prevents misunderstandings, avoids costly rework, and builds trust.

The Event Planner Analogy

When I recently used an event planner to organize a big party, I realized that in some ways, software development is like event planning. Hiring either one isn’t something you do every day. All the tasks might even feel a little overwhelming.  You don’t know exactly when decisions need to be made, and you might think important details are being forgotten.

You don’t want to be bogged down in the details, but you also need confidence that things are moving along.  Whether it’s the menu choices and table rentals, or the application testing progress and server configurations, you’d like to know what’s happening.

For us, there are many “ordinary” days filled with requirements gathering, design, coding, testing, and refining.  We’re experts at these things, so you don’t have to be, but it would be easy to forget to keep you informed about our progress. And just like with event planning, you don’t want us to go dark.  You’d rather get regular updates so that you know that launch day is on track.

How We Work with Our Clients

Our role isn’t just to write code, it’s to guide you through a process that may feel unfamiliar. That’s why our team makes communication a central part of how we work.

At J Street, we:

  • Translate technical progress into clear updates you can understand.
  • Share milestones so you feel confident about where the project stands.
  • Flag potential issues early before they become problems.
  • Stay responsive so you never feel left in the dark.

When hiring an event planner, you wouldn’t choose someone who only knows how to order decorations but can’t keep you updated on the guest list, timing, or big day details.

In the same way, don’t just hire a development shop for their coding skills. Hire one who can communicate clearly so your “launch day” is a success from start to finish.
